As Kate drove to the city of Laredo, about 140 miles away, Surrey regarded her from the passenger seat. “You know, what I said earlier about not seeking approval from anyone?”

“Yeah.” She kept her eyes on the road ahead.

“I see you took my advice.”

Her cheeks raised in a smile. “What do you mean?”

“You kicked ass back there in the meeting. For a minute, I thought you were the senior unit agent, not Fisher.”

“Did I come off that strong?” A brief uncertainty crossed her face.

Surrey raised his hands. “Hey, don’t backpedal now. You did what you thought you needed to do. And guess what? People listened. Fisher listened. I’ve noticed that he gives his people enough rope to do with what they will…”

“And you’re saying I haven’t hung myself with it yet?”

“Not yet.” He returned his gaze to the road. “No, I’m just saying, you did good back there. Exactly as you should’ve done. It was impressive, that’s all.”

“Thanks. Now I just need to back it up, huh?”

“Well, that’s another story.” He laughed.

It wasn’t often that Surrey opened up to Kate, but it had become a little more frequent over the course of this investigation. He’d even gone so far as to mention his kids. “You know, I forgot to tell you that I got an email a while back from the owner of the house you’re in.”

“Oh yeah?” Surrey asked.

“The son emailed me. I hadn’t heard from him since I recommended you for the place. Anyway, he just reached out to say how nice it was that you fixed the back deck and didn’t ask to be paid for it.”

“Oh, that. Yeah, no, it was nothing.” Surrey swatted away the comment. “It’s a nice place. And I think my kids will be coming to see me for Christmas soon, so I’m happy to have a house for them to run around in.”

Kate drew in her brow. “You don’t say much about them.”

“My kids?” he asked.

“I knew you were divorced, and of course, you mentioned the case about your daughter’s schoolmate. I mean, you are kind of a closed book, but I try not to hold that against you.” She smiled at him. “But it’s great. It’s great they’ll be coming to see you. Two kids? How old are they?”

“One of each. My son, Elijah, is 12, my daughter Emma is 10. Emma and I still struggle to get closer, but I hope as she gets older, that’ll change.”

“Elijah and Emma. Those are nice names. I’m sure Emma will grow to understand what this job entails. I imagine it’s not easy for a kid to get it,” Kate replied. “If they do come out, you should bring them by the office. I’d love to meet them.”

“Thanks. Maybe I will if it all works out. I have to settle a few issues with the ex, but fingers crossed. Do you and Scarborough plan on having kids?”

Kate glanced down for a moment.

“I’m sorry. That’s none of my business.” He turned away.

“No, no, it’s fine.
