As Kate drove to the city of Laredo, about 140 miles away, Surrey regarded her from the passenger seat. âYou know, what I said earlier about not seeking approval from anyone?â
âYeah.â She kept her eyes on the road ahead.
âI see you took my advice.â
Her cheeks raised in a smile. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou kicked ass back there in the meeting. For a minute, I thought you were the senior unit agent, not Fisher.â
âDid I come off that strong?â A brief uncertainty crossed her face.
Surrey raised his hands. âHey, donât backpedal now. You did what you thought you needed to do. And guess what? People listened. Fisher listened. Iâve noticed that he gives his people enough rope to do with what they willâ¦â
âAnd youâre saying I havenât hung myself with it yet?â
âNot yet.â He returned his gaze to the road. âNo, Iâm just saying, you did good back there. Exactly as you shouldâve done. It was impressive, thatâs all.â
âThanks. Now I just need to back it up, huh?â
âWell, thatâs another story.â He laughed.
It wasnât often that Surrey opened up to Kate, but it had become a little more frequent over the course of this investigation. Heâd even gone so far as to mention his kids. âYou know, I forgot to tell you that I got an email a while back from the owner of the house youâre in.â
âOh yeah?â Surrey asked.
âThe son emailed me. I hadnât heard from him since I recommended you for the place. Anyway, he just reached out to say how nice it was that you fixed the back deck and didnât ask to be paid for it.â
âOh, that. Yeah, no, it was nothing.â Surrey swatted away the comment. âItâs a nice place. And I think my kids will be coming to see me for Christmas soon, so Iâm happy to have a house for them to run around in.â
Kate drew in her brow. âYou donât say much about them.â
âMy kids?â he asked.
âI knew you were divorced, and of course, you mentioned the case about your daughterâs schoolmate. I mean, you are kind of a closed book, but I try not to hold that against you.â She smiled at him. âBut itâs great. Itâs great theyâll be coming to see you. Two kids? How old are they?â
âOne of each. My son, Elijah, is 12, my daughter Emma is 10. Emma and I still struggle to get closer, but I hope as she gets older, thatâll change.â
âElijah and Emma. Those are nice names. Iâm sure Emma will grow to understand what this job entails. I imagine itâs not easy for a kid to get it,â Kate replied. âIf they do come out, you should bring them by the office. Iâd love to meet them.â
âThanks. Maybe I will if it all works out. I have to settle a few issues with the ex, but fingers crossed. Do you and Scarborough plan on having kids?â
Kate glanced down for a moment.
âIâm sorry. Thatâs none of my business.â He turned away.
âNo, no, itâs fine.
